How we assess different kinds of product
The standard stays the same for every assessment, but the way we get into a product and use it depends on what you're submitting.
Software, web apps and mobile apps
What you provide. A working URL or app download and a test account with suitable permissions. If the product has several user roles, such as admin, standard user and viewer, we assess the main user journey unless you tell us otherwise.
How we assess. Assessors use the product as a real user would. They work through the key journeys (onboarding, core tasks, settings and help) and note friction, cognitive load, sensory triggers and executive function barriers. Keyboard-only navigation is tested as standard, and screen recordings and annotated screenshots are kept as evidence for the report.
Mobile testing. Products with mobile apps or responsive interfaces are tested on iOS and Android with VoiceOver and TalkBack, including touch targets, alternatives to gestures and mobile navigation.
Automated checks. Contrast ratios, font sizes, motion, reading level and notification frequency are checked with axe DevTools, WAVE and the Colour Contrast Analyser alongside the manual assessment.
Learning platforms and e-learning content
What you provide. Learner-level access to the platform and at least one complete course or module. Tell us if you want particular courses assessed, otherwise we'll choose a representative sample.
How we assess. Assessors complete the whole learner journey from enrolment to completion, including reading content, moving between sections, quizzes and assessments, progress tracking and completion. We pay close attention to timed elements, content density, reading load and whether learners can save and come back.
Extra focus. Learning content gets extra scrutiny against D2, reading and language accessibility, because content that's technically accessible but cognitively overwhelming still fails.
Websites and digital services
What you provide. The public URL, plus a test account for any area behind a login, such as a customer portal, booking flow or checkout. Tell us which journeys matter most and we'll prioritise them.
How we assess. Assessors use the site as a first-time visitor and as a returning user, and work through key journeys end to end, such as finding information, buying something, submitting a form and contacting support. We test on desktop and on mobile.
Extra focus. Online shops get extra scrutiny on D6, emotional safety and trust, for dark patterns, false urgency and manipulative design. Sites built around forms get close attention on D5, executive function support, for save and resume, chunking and error handling.
Content, documents and communications
What you provide. The documents or content you want assessed, such as PDFs, Word documents, slide decks, video, onboarding packs, help documentation or email templates. If there's a lot of it, we'll agree a representative sample.
How we assess. Content is assessed mainly against D1, cognitive load, D2, reading and language accessibility, and D7, flexibility and personalisation. We check reading level, structure, signposting, alternative formats and whether the content assumes a neurotypical way of processing. PDFs are tested with PAC and Adobe Acrobat Pro for structure, tagging and reading order.
Extra focus. Video is assessed for captions, pacing, visual complexity and whether the key information is also available as text. Documents are checked for navigation, heading structure and whether assistive technology can read them properly.
