Methodology

How we assess different types of products

The core standard is the same for every assessment. What changes is how we access and interact with the product. Here is what to expect depending on what you are submitting.

Software, web apps, and mobile apps +

What you provide: A working URL or app download, plus a test account with appropriate permissions. If the product has multiple user roles (admin, standard user, viewer), we assess the primary user journey unless you specify otherwise.

How we assess: Our assessors use the product as a real user would. They complete key task flows (onboarding, core tasks, settings, help), noting friction points, cognitive load issues, sensory triggers, and executive function barriers. Keyboard-only navigation is tested as standard. Screen recordings and annotated screenshots are captured as evidence for the report.

Mobile testing: Products with mobile apps or responsive interfaces are tested on iOS and Android with VoiceOver and TalkBack. Touch targets, gesture alternatives, and mobile-specific navigation are assessed.

Automated checks: Colour contrast ratios, font sizes, motion detection, reading level analysis, and notification frequency are checked using axe DevTools, WAVE, and Colour Contrast Analyser alongside the manual assessment.

Learning platforms and e-learning content +

What you provide: Learner-level access to the platform, plus at least one complete course or module to assess. If you want specific courses assessed, tell us which ones. Otherwise we will select a representative sample.

How we assess: Assessors complete the full learner journey from enrolment to completion. This includes content consumption, navigation between sections, quiz and assessment interactions, progress tracking, and completion flows. We pay particular attention to timed elements, content density, reading load, and whether learners can save and resume.

Additional focus: Learning content is assessed against D2 (Reading and Language Accessibility) with extra scrutiny. Content that is technically accessible but cognitively overwhelming still fails.

Websites and digital services +

What you provide: The public URL. If any areas require login access (customer portals, booking flows, checkout), provide a test account. Tell us which user journeys matter most and we will prioritise accordingly.

How we assess: Assessors navigate the site as a first-time visitor and as a returning user. Key flows (finding information, completing a purchase, submitting a form, contacting support) are assessed end to end. We test on desktop and mobile.

Additional focus: E-commerce sites receive extra scrutiny on D6 (Emotional Safety and Trust) for dark patterns, false urgency, and manipulative design. Form-heavy sites are assessed closely on D5 (Executive Function Support) for save-and-resume, chunking, and error handling.

Content, documents, and communications +

What you provide: Upload the documents, materials, or content you want assessed. This can include PDFs, Word documents, slide decks, video content, onboarding packs, help documentation, or email templates. If you have a large volume, we will agree a representative sample.

How we assess: Content is assessed primarily against D1 (Cognitive Load), D2 (Reading and Language Accessibility), and D7 (Flexibility and Personalisation). We check reading level, structure, signposting, alternative formats, and whether the content assumes a neurotypical processing style. PDF documents are tested with PAC (PDF Accessibility Checker) and Adobe Acrobat Pro for structure, tagging, and reading order.

Additional focus: Video content is assessed for captions, pacing, visual complexity, and whether key information is available in text form. Documents are assessed for navigability, heading structure, and whether assistive technology can parse them correctly.
